Garage Door Insulation and R-Value, Explained

What R-value means, how polystyrene and polyurethane differ and when an insulated door is worth it for your garage.

2 minute read

Key takeaways

  • R-value measures resistance to heat flow; higher means better insulation.
  • Construction quality and the seal matter as much as the number.
  • Insulation also stiffens and quiets the door.
  • It matters most for attached garages and workshops.

What R-value tells you

R-value rates how well a material resists heat moving through it. Garage doors commonly range from about R-6 to R-18, depending on the build. A higher number means better resistance, but the real-world result depends on the door's construction, seal and the space around it.

A door with a high R-value and gaps around the edge will not perform as well as a good door with tight seals.

Polystyrene versus polyurethane

Polystyrene panels use rigid foam boards fitted inside the steel shell. They are a solid choice for moderate insulation. Polyurethane foam is injected and bonds to the steel, giving higher R-values, greater rigidity and a quieter door.

Polyurethane builds typically feel more solid, which is one reason they are popular for attached garages and rooms above the garage.

Who benefits most

If your garage is attached, used as a workshop or gym, or sits beneath a bedroom, insulation improves comfort and reduces noise. West-facing doors that bake in summer sun gain a lot from it.

For a detached garage used only for parking, a non-insulated door can be perfectly adequate.

Seals and the rest of the garage

A door's insulation works together with its seals. A new bottom seal and fresh weatherstripping close the gaps that insulation alone cannot. Walls, ceilings and any gaps around the garage matter too.

In Middle Tennessee, with hot humid summers and cold snaps, a well-sealed insulated door helps moderate the extremes.

Quick answers

Will an insulated door lower my utility bills?

It can help if the garage is attached, but results vary. It is one of several factors.

Are insulated doors noisier or quieter?

Quieter. The foam stiffens the panels and reduces rattle.
