Troubleshooting

Garage Door Won't Open? Troubleshooting Checklist

A step-by-step checklist for a garage door that will not open or close, from remote batteries to springs, and when to call for help.

Key takeaways

  • Start with the simple things: power, batteries, lock and sensors.
  • A door that hums but does not lift often has a broken spring.
  • Never force a stuck door.
  • Call a professional for springs, cables and bent track.

Check power and controls first

Make sure the opener is plugged in and the outlet or breaker is working. Replace the batteries in the remote and try the wall button. If the wall button works but the remote does not, the remote or its programming is the problem.

Check that the wall panel's lock feature is not engaged, since it blocks remotes.

Check the sensors and the door's path

If the door closes partway and reverses, or the opener light blinks, check the photo-eye sensors. Wipe the lenses, make sure nothing is blocking them and that both indicator lights are on.

Also check for objects or debris in the door's path and in the tracks.

Listen for clues

If the opener runs but the door does not move, the door may be disconnected, or a spring or cable may have failed. A loud bang followed by a heavy door means a broken spring.

Do not try to lift the door by hand if you suspect a spring or cable problem. It may be too heavy and could drop.

When to call

Call for service if you see a broken spring, frayed cable, bent track or crooked door, or if the door has come off its track. These are safety issues.

If the door is stuck open and you need it secured, tell us when you call so we can plan the soonest appointment.

Quick answers

Why does my opener hum but the door will not move?

The most common cause is a broken spring. A stripped drive gear is another.

Can I open my garage door during a power outage?

Yes. Pull the red release cord to disconnect the door and lift it by hand, if the springs are intact.
